WHAT IS EXIF DATA?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is a set of information that is embedded in an image file (usually JPEG or TIFF) by digital cameras and smartphones when a photo is taken. It records technical details about the image, the camera settings, and sometimes even the location.

Here are some key details included in EXIF data:

  • Camera Information: Brand, model, and firmware version of the camera used.

  • Exposure Settings: Shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and whether flash was used.

  • Focal Length: The lens focal length used to take the photo.

  • Date and Time: When the photo was taken.

  • Image Resolution: Dimensions in pixels and compression details.

  • GPS Data: If the camera has GPS capabilities, it can record the geographical location where the photo was taken.

  • Orientation: Information on how the camera was positioned (landscape or portrait).

The following is a simplified version of the steps to view EXIF data on a Mac.

Using Preview:

  • Open the image in Preview.

  • Click Tools > Show Inspector.

  • Click the i icon and select the Exif tab.

EXIF data helps photographers analyze their settings for future shoots, while also proving useful for organizing and editing images. I hope you find this information insightful and valuable.

As always, best of luck!
