THE EVOLUTION OF CAMERA STABILIZATION: COMPARING IBIS, IS, AND VR

In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) represents the next step in stabilization technology, complementing rather than replacing traditional systems like Nikon’s Vibration Reduction (VR) and Canon’s Image Stabilization (IS).

VR and IS are lens-based systems that use motors to move lens elements and reduce camera shake. They effectively stabilize specific lenses, making them ideal for DSLR cameras, where stabilization depends on the lens.

IBIS: In contrast, IBIS is built directly into the camera body. It stabilizes images by moving the camera’s sensor to counteract shake. The big advantage is that IBIS works with any lens attached to the camera, even older lenses without built-in stabilization.

How They Work Together: In many modern mirrorless systems, IBIS can complement lens-based VR or IS. Some cameras combine both systems for even stronger stabilization, producing sharp images in challenging situations like long exposures, handheld shooting, and low-light conditions.

IBIS doesn’t replace VR or IS, but it’s a big step forward that adds flexibility. Instead of needing lenses with built-in stabilization, photographers can now have stabilization with almost any lens, thanks to IBIS in mirrorless cameras.

As always, best of luck!
