HOW TO USE THE AUTO EXPOSURE LOCK (AEL) CAMERA SETTING: A SIMPLE EXPLANATION

AEL (aka AEL Lock) is a function in your camera that allows you to re-frame a scene while keeping the current exposure constant. It helps maintain the same brightness between shots.

The AEL function is especially useful when shooting multiple pictures to stitch together into a panorama. By using AEL, each picture maintains the same exposure, ensuring your newly-created panorama looks like it was shot as one seamless photo.

The AEL function button will usually be found on the back of your camera.

Here is how to:

1. Simply, set your camera to a semi-automatic mode such as aperture or shutter priority.  AEL is not typically used in full manual mode.

2. Compose your image and point the camera at the area you want to base your exposure on. This could be a specific subject or a part of the scene with the desired lighting.

3. Activate AEL by pressing the AEL button on your camera. The location of this button varies by camera model, so refer to your camera's manual if you can't find it. Some cameras might allow you to set a custom button for AEL.

4.  With AEL activated, re-frame your shot as desired. The exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO) will remain locked to the values as you are pressing down the AEL button.

5.  Press the shutter button to take your photo with the locked exposure settings.

6. Depending on your camera, AEL might remain active until you release the button or take the shot. Check your camera’s settings to understand how it handles AEL.

Using the AEL setting ensures consistent exposure across multiple shots, making it ideal for creating seamless panoramas and maintaining uniform brightness in your photos.

I recommend giving this useful function a try!

As always, best of luck!
