What Does the Number “1” on your Lens Means?

Markings like 1:1 or 1:2 on your lens indicate the magnification capability of your lens—an essential detail for close-up and macro photography.  Below I will share why these numbers matter and when they become important.

Magnification Ratios Made Simple

  • 1:1 (Life Size): The subject appears exactly the same size on the camera’s sensor as it is in real life.

  • 1:2 (Half Size): The subject is half its actual size on the sensor.

  • 1:4 (Quarter Size): The subject appears a quarter of its actual size.
