THE ZOOM BLUR EFFECT: ADDING MOTION TO YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY

What Is Zoom Blur?

Zoom blur, also known as zoom burst, is a dynamic photography technique that creates a sense of motion by intentionally blurring parts of an image while keeping the center sharp. This effect is achieved by adjusting the zoom on a lens while taking a photo with a slower shutter speed. The result? A striking radial blur that draws the viewer’s eye into the center of the image.

How to Achieve the Zoom Blur Effect In-Camera

To create this effect manually, you’ll need:

  • A zoom lens (like an 16-50mm, 18-55mm, 24-70mm or 70-200mm)

  • A slow shutter speed (1/10s to 1/2s works well)

  • A steady hand or tripod for controlled movement

Steps to Create a Zoom Blur Effect:

  1. Set your camera to shutter priority (S or Tv mode) and choose a slower shutter speed (start around 1/10s and adjust as needed).

  2. Focus on your subject before zooming in or out. The goal is to maintain clarity in the center while allowing the outer edges to blur.

  3. Use a steady motion to zoom in or out while pressing the shutter. The smoother the zoom, the cleaner the blur.

  4. Experiment with direction and intensity. Try different zoom speeds and focal lengths for varied results.

  • Street & Event Photography – Enhances the sense of movement and atmosphere.

  • Architecture & Abstracts – Creates a futuristic or surreal aesthetic.

  • Night Photography – Works beautifully with city lights and long exposures.

The zoom blur effect is a creative way to move from static compositions and inject exciting movement into your photography. It’s a simple yet powerful technique to explore.

As always, best of luck!
