Flat lighting in photography refers to a lighting technique where the light source illuminates the subject directly from the front and at a low angle. This technique minimizes shadows on the subject's face or the main features of the photographed object. It tends to produce very even lighting across the scene.

Flat lighting is often used in situations where the goal is to create a clean, simple image free from harsh shadows or dramatic contrasts. This makes it particularly popular in portrait photography, especially for mature skin, corporate headshots or catalog work where the emphasis is on clarity and neutrality rather than mood or atmosphere.

In the above demonstration, note the slight shadows under the subject’s chin, neck, and chest area.

Alternatively, in this demonstration, the subject holds a reflector under the chin and neck area, which eliminates shadows and slightly brightens the image.

The flat lighting technique is excellent for creating clear and simple photos. By minimizing shadows and highlights, it is ideal for professional photography like corporate headshots, where clarity and accuracy are key.
