I will soon be going on a short trip to visit family and will be taking my dependable Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN prime lens (for Sony cameras), which will be a wonderful way to capture candid moments, portraits, and the essence of our time together.

One of the benefits of traveling with a 35mm prime lens is its compact size, allowing me to pack as light as possible.  A small camera bag or backpack is sufficient for my camera body and 35mm lens.  Another advantage of a 35mm prime lens is that it offers me the opportunity to photograph in a variety of lighting conditions due to its flexible aperture of f/1.4.

Below I offer some tips when using a 35mm lens on your travels.

  • Pack Light: One of the benefits of a 35mm lens is its compact size. Take advantage of this by packing light! The 35mm lens will make it easier to move around while walking about and exploring during your trip.

  •  Capture Candid Moments: The 35mm lens is excellent for capturing candid, spontaneous moments. It is wide enough to include multiple people in a frame, making it great for group shots and capturing subject interactions.

  •  Make Environmental Portraits: Take advantage of a wider perspective to create environmental portraits when possible. Include elements of the surroundings to provide context to your photos.

  •  Utilize Natural Light: The wide aperture of many 35mm prime lenses allows for excellent performance in low-light conditions.

  • Remain unobtrusive: The compact size of the 35mm lens makes it less intimidating than a zoom lens. Additionally, you will attract less attention, helping you blend into an environment and allowing you to capture more natural and unposed moments.

  • Tell a Story: You can plan your shots to tell a visual story of your trip. Capture the journey, arrival and various activities throughout your journey which can potentially create a narrative in your photo collection.
